My INDS Degree

After my first semester at UMBC, I didn’t feel like my major at the time was allowing me to pursue my goal. So after conversations with advisors I was referred to INDS. At first I was skeptical about the idea of making a new major and how it can translate to the work after graduation. Ultimately, I decided on INDS because it allowed for a platform to expand and build on your path. I felt like I am deciding how my life is going to unfold rather than going to set paths that lead to a certain destination.

Post Graduation Plans

My plans after graduation is to attend Graduate school in either Orthopedic and Prosthetics engineering or in Certified Prosthetics and Orthotics. As I am wiring this I am yet to hear from some places I have applied to and also finishing up some applications so hoping for good news. The vision I have for applying my INDS degree is allowing an out of the box mindset on how to develop prosthetics. Engineers tend to get very technical and very limited thinking based on what is possible technologically and Prosthetist rely only on their training of fabrication only based on the materials provided and the patient. I would like to use my Degree to introduce new ways of thinking when it comes to making prosthetics.

Courses In My INDS Degree

Mechanical Aspects of Prosthetics: I will be introduced to how mechanical systems and material work together. These courses will help me to develop skills and to understand how to design the prosthesis sockets while maintaining the integrity of the prosthetic device as a whole. (ENME 220, 204, 301, 304, 332Lab)

Understanding the Human Body: These courses will enable me to gain a fundamental knowledge on the human body. I will gain knowledge about the anatomy and physiological systems that are responsible for the sensory and movement of the body. These courses will allow me to gain knowledge on how to create comfortable prosthetics in reference to the natural body. (PSYCH 375, BIOL 251, 252)

Interaction and Behavior of Patients: These courses will provide me with a fundamental understanding of how behavior affects health and effective therapeutic approaches to improve health using effective communication skills.  (PBHL 340, MLL 305, PSYC 285, 335, 370)

Individualized Study: These courses will allow me to integrate different disciplines important to my degree and prepare me for my capstone project. (INDS 330, 335,480, 490)
