Meet Nicole Brown

My INDS Degree

My individualized degree focused on the study of acute and chronic disease through an integrated lens of biology, chemistry, and Public Health with support of Psychology. Grounded in the biopsychosocial model, which “systematically considers biological, psychological, and social factors and their complex interactions in understanding health, illness, and health care delivery” (University of Rochester Medical Center1), this degree will examine the mechanisms of disease, symptom progression, and the impact on individuals and communities. The National Cancer Institute2 (NCI) defines disease as “an abnormal condition that affects the structure or function of part or all of the body and is usually associated with specific signs and symptoms,” which may arise from infectious agents or internal dysfunctions (NCI).

Through this degree, I aim to investigate how various disciplines intersect to shape the development, experience, and management of disease, ultimately preparing me for further advanced study and a career dedicated to improving health outcomes. In accordance with these definitions, my degree will focus heavily on understanding the properties and mechanisms through which both infectious agents and possible predispositions may impact human health. To begin studying disease my degree plan will explore the study of biological molecular mechanisms and consequences of diseases through a combination of coursework, hands-on laboratory work, and innovative research projects. This comprehensive approach will allow for a deeper understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical applications, equipping me with the necessary skills to learn the development of new therapies and preventive measures. Through this blend of learning and research, I will gain a well-rounded perspective on the complexities of disease and the strategies employed to combat them.
