My INDS Degree

I chose to major in INDS because I knew that it would give me the opportunity to learn and study all of my interests while preparing for a degree based on physical therapy. It allowed me to take courses based on children (as a pediatric physical therapist), fulfill my prerequisite courses for DPT school, and to take some business courses in case I ever want to switch to the business side of physical therapy or run my own practice someday. My degree plan addresses the importance of caring for pediatric patients in a holistic manner. Taking a holistic viewpoint on rehabilitation allows me to focus on restoring the patient’s physical state while also considering their mental and social needs. Although I am currently in between physical and occupational therapy, this degree plan will prepare me for either career path and to be a competitive candidate for graduate school.

Post Graduation Plans

After graduation, I will be attending a Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Marymount University in the fall. I see myself using this degree to remember that physical therapy isn’t just about physical needs but mental, social and spiritual needs as well. I plan to utilize this mindset with my patients as a DPT and even during my clinicals (in the DPT program) as I prepare to become a DPT.

Courses In My INDS Degree

Knowledge of the human body: These courses give me knowledge and understanding of the physiological systems of the body (digestive system, nervous system, skeletal system, etc.). These courses will help me in the preparation of becoming a physical or occupational therapist by increasing my knowledge and understanding of the body in order to provide the appropriate and necessary assistance to patients so they can return to their daily lives and functions.

(BIOL 251, BIOL 251L, BIOL 252, BIOL 252L)

Psychological Aspects of Mental and Physical Health: These courses will help me to understand how mental and physical health aspects coincide and the psychological impact on physical health conditions. Gaining this knowledge will help me in providing that holistic care to patients, with a specific focus on children, which will bring awareness to the importance of the patient’s social and mental health in my interpersonal interactions.

(PSYC 200, PSYC 285, PSYC 305, PSYC 306, PSYC 355/PSYC 385, PSYC 365)

Patient-Centered Skills and Knowledge in Healthcare: These courses will give me the skills and knowledge to focus on patients so I can make them the main priority when working as a physical or occupational therapist. This will strengthen my sociological knowledge of health, my understanding of public and emergency health, and will expand my knowledge of how to care for patients from different cultures.

(SOCY 351, EHS 200, EHS 340, MLL 305, PBHL 340, INDS 410)

Skills and Knowledge of Business Management: These courses will give me certain knowledge and management skills that will help me to run a business and/or department and will give me perspectives on attaining high ethical standards as a healthcare professional.

(MGMT 210, MGMT 385, MLL 305)

Individualized Study: – These courses give me the opportunity to combine several disciplines into a degree plan and will help me develop a capstone project based on an independent research study (or other creative work) that enables me to use the knowledge I’ve gained from my degree plan.
