My INDS Degree

My INDS degree is Child Development and Communication Studies with the intent of becoming a Speech Language Pathologist for children. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) defines a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) as an individual who works “to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders” in their patients (ASHA, 2024). Pediatric Speech-Language Pathology specifically involves “the evaluation and treatment of patients from birth to 18 years old” (ASHA 2024).

To build a strong foundation in speech pathology, I have incorporate courses in biology, psychology, linguistics, as well as the communication sciences and disorders into my degree. Through the study of biology, I will better understand the anatomy and physiology of the human body, which is necessary to know when examining abnormalities. Specifically, I am interested in how irregularities in the human vocal tract can lead to oral-motor dysfunctions, as well as how deviations in brain chemistry or structure can cause neurological and learning problems. By taking courses in psychology, particularly those regarding child psychology, I will be able to gain knowledge about the ways in which a child’s development is influenced by their interactions with family and peers. This field will also give me the opportunity to familiarize myself with developmental milestones, neurodivergence in children, as well as any common emotions or behaviors that I may encounter on the job. In addition, the study of linguistics will allow me to better understand how humans produce and comprehend language. I am especially interested in child language acquisition and the various components of linguistics, such as phonology and morphology. The field of communication sciences and disorders will teach me about the biological, physical, social, and linguistic aspects of human communication. I am also interested in learning how to better address children and their families, not just the parents. I also want to learn how to best promote health when patients have extenuating circumstances such as lower socioeconomic statuses and opposing cultural beliefs.

Post Graduation Plans

After graduation, I plan to pursue graduate school to earn my master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I’m confident that my INDS degree will set me apart as a candidate because it reflects the intentional and interdisciplinary approach I’ve taken towards receiving my education. By designing a program that integrates the fields of Psychology, Linguistics, Biology, and Public Health, I’ve been able to develop a strong foundation that aligns with my career goals. My INDS degree is not just a reflection of my academic interests—it’s evidence of how I’ve taken ownership of my learning journey, demonstrating initiative and commitment to pursuing Speech-Language Pathology in a unique and meaningful way.

Courses In My INDS Degree

Neurodivergence and Child Psychology: To understand the wide range of pediatric clients that I may encounter in the field, as well as how to best connect with and support them and their individual needs. (PSYC 210, 285, 305, 330, 365)

Studies in Language and Communication: To understand the components, mechanisms and structures behind language and communication, then combine these psychological and
physiological backgrounds into understanding how communication occurs and eventually identifying and treating speech and communication disorders. (BIOL 251, 252, LING 210, 470, PSYC 316)

Communication with Diverse Populations: To build the skills necessary to communicate with children and their families, focusing specifically on, learning how to facilitate tough conversations while maintaining and considering a patient-provider-parent relationship.  (EDHS 340, MLL 305, PBHL 340, PHIL 385, PSYC 330, SOCY 351)

Understanding Health Sciences: Understanding the connection between health and speech disorders will prepare me to address the holistic needs of clients by considering both their physical and communicative health. (PBHL 200, PBHL 340, SOCY 351)

Individualized Study:To create a unique degree plan by combining several of the traditional programs in order to cultivate a multidisciplinary perspective.. (INDS 330, 335,  410, 480, 490)
