The Benefits of Being Mentored:

In various studies across fields, being mentored has consistently been linked with academic and professional achievement. Students perform better when they feel part of a college community, which tends to be a challenge for most first-year students.

  • Get connected to UMBC and INDS

  • Receive guidance and advice from a knowledgeable peer

  • Gain access to networks and other resources

  • Develop an increased understanding of your academic discipline

  • Start your time at UMBC with a positive outlook

Expectations of a Mentee:

Peer mentees are encouraged to reach out to the mentor, ask questions, and respond to the mentor. The mentoring relationship is to last ONE semester, although you can continue your mentoring relationship beyond the semester. Mentors can have more than one mentee, and a mentee can request to have more than one mentor.

Once the match has been made, your mentor will contact you to arrange your first face-to-face meeting.

Responsibilities of the Peer Mentee: 

– Be available, accountable, accessible and consistent

– Be Prompt and reliable

– Ask questions and seek advice, then listen and explore options

– Look to the mentor for encouragement, friendship, guidance and coaching

– Set reasonable expectations and goals and share with mentor

– Make every effort to achieve your program goal

– Utilize information and resources provided by mentor

INDS Welcome Week Breakfast: Monday 8/31, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., lower level of Fine Arts

Involvement Fest: Wednesday 9/2, 12-3, The Quad

S’mores and Movie Social: Thursday 9/17, 6:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m., Erickson Field

Tie Dye: Wednesday 9/30, 11 a.m. – 1:00 p.m, The Commons Main Street

Homecoming Brunch: Saturday 10/10, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., lower level Fine Arts, plus variety of other Homecoming events throughout the week

Pumpkin Decorating: Wednesday 10/28, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., The Commons Main Street

Pumpkin Delivery: Friday 10/30, 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., DelRey School

Any sporting events, like Midnight Madness (mid-October)
